Historic Lord Byron Figurehead Returns to Seascale

05 Apr 2026 Historic Lord Byron Figurehead Returns to Seascale

Residents of Seascale gathered in large numbers to welcome back a historic ship’s figurehead linked to Lord Byron, following an extensive restoration project. The unveiling took place amid strong winds from Storm Dave, adding a dramatic backdrop to the occasion.

The figurehead, long associated with local heritage, has stood as a recognisable feature of the village for generations. Its origins are tied to local folklore, which recounts that the carving was salvaged from a shipwreck off Selker Rocks during a fierce storm in 1884 and later mounted on one of the area’s oldest homes.

The property, known as The Neb on Driggs Road, was recently renovated by its owners with assistance from a specialist restoration group from North Yorkshire. The team undertook careful work to preserve the historic carving, ensuring it could be returned to its prominent place in the village.

The restored figurehead was officially unveiled during a community event attended by local residents and visitors, including a large group who travelled from North Yorkshire to witness the occasion. Organisers described the turnout as overwhelming and expressed pride in preserving a piece of Seascale’s history for future generations.

Although some details of the figurehead’s past remain uncertain, locals are confident in its identity and significance, viewing it as an enduring symbol of the village’s maritime heritage.
