Dog Walkers in Cumbria Issued Urgent Warning Over Venomous Adder Bite Risk

30 Apr 2026 Dog Walkers in Cumbria Issued Urgent Warning Over Venomous Adder Bite Risk

Dog walkers in Cumbria have been urged to stay alert after warnings were issued about the risk posed by venomous adders, the UK’s only native poisonous snake. The alert comes as sightings increase in popular walking areas, particularly during warmer months when the reptiles become more active.

Experts say adders are commonly found in habitats such as moorland, woodland edges, and grassy areas, which are frequently visited by walkers and their pets. As Cumbria is largely rural and known for its outdoor landscapes, the risk is higher for those exploring nature trails.

The warning highlights that dogs are especially vulnerable, as their natural curiosity often leads them to investigate undergrowth where snakes may be hiding. In some cases, bites can cause serious swelling, pain, and potentially life threatening complications if not treated quickly.

Symptoms of an adder bite in dogs can include sudden yelping, limping, swelling around the bite area, and visible distress. Pet owners are being advised to seek immediate veterinary care if they suspect a bite, as early treatment can be critical.

Walkers are also encouraged to keep dogs on leads in higher risk areas and avoid letting pets roam through dense vegetation. Staying on clear paths and remaining aware of surroundings can significantly reduce the chances of an encounter.

Although adder bites to humans are rare and usually not fatal, they can still cause severe discomfort and require medical attention. Experts stress that these snakes are not aggressive and will typically only bite if disturbed.

The warning serves as a reminder for both residents and visitors to take sensible precautions while enjoying the outdoors, with officials emphasizing that awareness and caution can help prevent serious incidents.
