Cumbria Braced For Downpours Before Warmer Weather Arrives
Residents across Cumbria are being warned to expect a wet and unsettled end to the weekend, with widespread heavy rain and strong winds affecting much of the county today.
The heaviest conditions are expected across the county, with coastal areas including Barrow and Whitehaven facing particularly strong winds. Forecast information indicates that gusts in these areas could approach 19 metres per second.
Temperatures are expected to reach around 17C today, while the likelihood of rain remains very high across many parts of Cumbria. Towns including Barrow, Ulverston, Kendal, Windermere and Ambleside are all expected to experience significant rainfall.
The weather is expected to improve considerably on Monday, when much of the county should enjoy a drier and brighter day. However, the improvement will be short-lived as conditions become unsettled again later in the week.
A noticeable rise in temperatures is forecast for Tuesday, with some areas expected to reach around 19C to 21C. Despite the warmer conditions during the day, heavy rain is expected to return overnight, bringing another spell of unsettled weather. Wednesday is then expected to remain wet and unsettled, with frequent showers and further rainfall across the county. Temperatures could remain close to 19C before conditions become cooler on Thursday.
There will also be differences between coastal and inland parts of Cumbria. While coastal locations are likely to experience stronger winds, inland areas such as Alston could see overnight temperatures fall to around 5C during the early part of the week.
The Met Office describes the wider UK pattern as an unsettled end to the week, with heavy rain and strong winds moving in from the west on Sunday, followed by a fine Monday and warmer, windy conditions on Tuesday. A yellow weather warning is also listed for Sunday, while no warnings are currently shown for Monday through Wednesday.
Drivers and pedestrians are being advised to take extra care during periods of heavy rain and strong winds, particularly in exposed coastal locations. Conditions are expected to become calmer on Monday before the warmer but unsettled spell arrives on Tuesday.
