Westmorland Orchestra to Explore Storytelling Theme in ‘1001 Nights’ Inspired Concert
The Westmorland Orchestra is set to take audiences on a musical storytelling journey with its upcoming concert inspired by One Thousand and One Nights, also known as 1001 Nights. The programme will explore narrative-driven music, blending classical orchestral performance with themes of myth, imagination, and storytelling tradition.
The concert forms part of the orchestra’s wider season of performances across Cumbria and will be conducted by Music Director Melvin Tay, who continues to lead the ensemble’s diverse and ambitious repertoire. The orchestra is known for combining well-known classical works with lesser-performed pieces and contemporary compositions.
At the heart of the programme is Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov’s Scheherazade, a symphonic suite directly inspired by tales from One Thousand and One Nights. The work is widely recognised for its vivid orchestration and narrative musical structure, depicting legendary stories through sweeping themes and orchestral colour.
Alongside this, the concert features works that highlight different musical voices, including contemporary and historical composers, reflecting the orchestra’s commitment to both traditional and modern repertoire.
Organisers say the performance aims to highlight how music can function as storytelling, drawing audiences into different emotional and imaginative worlds through sound. The concert is expected to appeal to both regular classical music audiences and newcomers interested in narrative-based performance experiences.
The Westmorland Orchestra continues to play an active role in the region’s cultural life, performing regularly in Kendal and surrounding areas and supporting musical engagement across Cumbria.
