Tourism Blow for Lake District: Keswick Visitor Info Centre Staff Face Redundancy
Staff at the Keswick visitor information centre in the Lake District are facing redundancy after being informed last week that their roles are at risk amid plans to close the centre at the end of January.
The decision affects seven employees three on permanent contracts and four on zero-hours contracts, amounting to 2.26 full-time equivalent jobs.
Sarah Calderbank, Head of Communications and Engagement at the Lake District National Park Authority, explained that the organisation decided not to renew the lease at the Moot Hall, where the centre is based, following a significant rent increase, rising operating costs and an 8.2 % cut to the authority’s core funding.
The visitor information centre, which has served Keswick’s millions of annual guests for nearly 25 years, will now close on 31 January to allow time for a new tenant reportedly a café to take over the space.
Calderbank said the authority had “worked hard” to find alternative premises and ways to continue providing visitor support in the Keswick area, but thus far no viable solution has been found. A consultation on staffing was launched on 12 January, which led to the redundancy risk for the seven staff members.
“We are disappointed to confirm this outcome,” Calderbank added, noting that the authority will continue to explore options, including the possibility of maintaining a visitor information presence with the incoming tenant at the Moot Hall, though details remain unclear at this stage.
The closure has drawn concern from local tourism businesses and residents, who warn that losing a dedicated information centre could make it harder for visitors especially those unfamiliar with the area to get essential advice about attractions, accommodation and activities.
The centre’s closure underscores ongoing challenges for the Lake District’s tourism sector, which has seen staffing pressures and operational changes in recent years as businesses adapt to economic and labour market conditions
