Sea of Sunflowers to Brighten West Cumbria Again Free Entry for All at Historic Cockermouth Castle
A striking “sea of sunflowers” is coming back to West Cumbria this spring in a moving display to support Hospice at Home West Cumbria.
From Friday, 10 April to Monday, 13 April, the grounds of Cockermouth Castle will be filled with 500 handcrafted ironwork sunflowers creating a beautiful and symbolic sight for visitors. Entry to the display is free, and everyone is invited to come along whether they’re remembering loved ones, supporting the hospice’s work, or simply enjoying the uplifting visual spectacle.
Last year’s first sunflower event took place at St Bees Priory, drawing widespread community support and raising awareness of the hospice’s vital services. This year’s display continues that tradition with an even more central location and the backing of local supporters, including Lord and Lady Egremont whose estate is hosting the event at the historic castle.
Holly Harkness, community fundraising coordinator for the hospice, said the sunflower has become a universal symbol of hospice care, representing light, loyalty and love ideals at the heart of the charity’s mission. Alongside the visual installation, supporters will have the opportunity to buy and dedicate sunflowers in memory of loved ones, with dedications displayed during the event.
After the display ends, visitors will be able to take their sunflower home a lasting remembrance and keepsake, as well as a way to continue supporting the hospice’s work.
All proceeds from this event go directly to Hospice at Home West Cumbria, which provides crucial care and support to patients and families facing the most challenging moments in life.
