Calls Grow to Reopen The Forum as Barrow’s Arts Scene Faces Uncertain Future
Calls to reopen The Forum in Barrow are growing after local performers warned the prolonged closure is threatening the future of the town’s arts scene.
The venue has been shut since July 2024 due to asbestos concerns, and theatre group Walney Musical Theatre (WMT) has now written an open letter to Westmorland and Furness Council, describing the closure as “a huge missed opportunity”.
WMT warned that without urgent action, regular amateur performances in the town centre could disappear altogether.
Frustration Over Delays
The council has confirmed that no firm decisions will be made until at least March, as plans are developed alongside a £200 million regeneration project for Barrow town Centre.
However, many residents say the delay is unacceptable. Carol Story criticized the approach, saying the town risks losing its theatre groups entirely if action is not taken now, adding that Barrow “deserves better”.
Temporary Venues ‘Not Enough’
While performances have been staged at venues such as Barrow Town Hall, Ulverston’s Coronation Hall, and care homes, the council has acknowledged these alternatives have not met the needs of all groups.
Residents and performers argue that without a proper theatre space, touring shows, pantomimes and comedy acts are unlikely to come to Barrow.
Community Impact
Many say The Forum was more than a theatre, bringing families, young people and older residents together and supporting the Town Centre economy.
Others fear young performers are being particularly affected, with fewer opportunities to perform and develop their talents.
Despite acknowledging local frustration, the council says it is working with new partners, including BAE Systems and central Government, to secure a long term solution.
For now, campaigners warn that without progress soon, Barrow risks losing a vital part of its cultural and community life.
