Walker Dies Near Lake District Summit Despite Rescue Efforts.
A man has died after collapsing near the summit of Scafell Pike, despite prolonged efforts by members of the public and emergency crews to save him.
Cumbria Police received a 999 call at around 1.30pm on Tuesday, August 25, reporting that the man had collapsed at Broad Crag Col, a high-level location on the mountain. The man's brother and members of the public had already begun CPR before emergency services arrived at the remote location.
Wasdale Mountain Rescue Team was called to assist, but rescuers faced significant challenges because of the location and extremely limited communications in the area. The emergency 999 call was nevertheless able to provide an accurate position, allowing rescue teams to locate the casualty.
The Great North Air Ambulance Service and the Maritime and Coastguard Agency were also deployed to support the rescue operation. The air ambulance reached the scene early and medical crews continued CPR in an effort to save the man's life.
A Coastguard helicopter also attended, positioning itself on the summit to provide additional support to the emergency operation. Despite the prolonged rescue and resuscitation efforts, the man sadly died at the scene. His body was subsequently brought down from the mountain by the Coastguard helicopter.
The man's brother was escorted safely from the hill by members of the Wasdale Mountain Rescue Team. A total of 17 mountain rescue team members were involved in the incident, which lasted for more than seven hours.
The operation required coordination between mountain rescue volunteers, the air ambulance service, the Coastguard and police, highlighting the complex nature of emergencies in the Lake District's mountainous terrain. Broad Crag Col is located at high altitude on the route towards Scafell Pike, England's highest mountain, where conditions can be challenging even during periods of relatively good weather.
Mountain rescue teams regularly respond to incidents involving walkers and climbers across the Lake District, often operating in difficult and remote locations. The latest incident also highlights the importance of being properly prepared when walking in the mountains, where mobile phone coverage can be limited and emergency assistance may take time to reach casualties.
Wasdale Mountain Rescue Team thanked the Great North Air Ambulance Service and Coastguard helicopter crews for their assistance during the operation. The team also expressed its condolences to the man's family and friends following his death. The tragic incident serves as a reminder of the potential dangers of high-level walking and the vital role played by emergency services and mountain rescue volunteers in responding to incidents across the Lake District.
