Record-Breaking Youngster Raises Funds for Lake District Rescue Teams

21 Apr 2026 Record-Breaking Youngster Raises Funds for Lake District Rescue Teams

A remarkable young adventurer from Cumbria is raising funds for mountain rescue teams in the Lake District as he continues his record-breaking journey across the region’s highest peaks.

Leo Mason, aged 11, has already achieved an extraordinary milestone, becoming the youngest person believed to have completed all 214 Wainwright peaks five times in the fastest time. Now, he has set himself an even more ambitious goal—completing the peaks a total of 10 times.

As he embarks on his sixth round, Leo is using the challenge to support several mountain rescue teams, including those based in Keswick, Cockermouth, Langdale Ambleside, Coniston, and Wasdale. His current effort is focused on raising funds for the Keswick team.

Leo’s achievements are even more inspiring given that he lives with Tourette’s syndrome, ADHD, and hyperactivity. Together with his father, Michael, he shares his journey online, raising awareness of these conditions while documenting their outdoor adventures.

His passion for the mountains began when he accompanied his father on walks, eventually helping scatter the ashes of a close family friend. Since then, his love for the outdoors has grown, with his family noting that time spent in the mountains has had a positive impact on his wellbeing.

Supporters have praised Leo’s determination and resilience, as each climb presents both physical and mental challenges. His efforts not only highlight his personal achievements but also provide vital support to the volunteer rescue teams who assist people in difficulty across the Lake District.
