Kind Hearted Walkers Help Rescue 88 Year Old Man After Collapse In Lake District

12 Jul 2026 Kind Hearted Walkers Help Rescue 88 Year Old Man After Collapse In Lake District

An 88 year old man was rescued after collapsing while walking in the Lake District, thanks to the swift actions of two members of the public. The incident happened near High Lodore Farm after the elderly walker became unable to continue his journey. Keswick Mountain Rescue Team was called to assist and safely bring him down the hillside.

The emergency call was received at around 3.20pm on Tuesday, July 7, while the rescue team was already responding to another incident. Two walkers came across the man after he had walked from the Derwentwater lakeshore beyond Ashness Bridge towards High Lodore Farm. They immediately helped support him as he struggled to walk before raising the alarm. Their prompt actions helped ensure the man received professional assistance as quickly as possible.

Members of Keswick Mountain Rescue Team reached the scene and carried out an assessment of the elderly walker. Rescuers then assisted him down to High Lodore Farm, where he was able to continue his journey safely. He was later taken to Keswick Minor Injuries Unit as a precaution for further medical checks. The rescue operation involved 10 volunteer team members.

The entire incident lasted one hour and 54 minutes, highlighting the dedication of volunteer mountain rescuers who regularly respond to emergencies across the Lake District. The team was able to manage the call despite already dealing with another rescue at the time. The incident also demonstrated the important role that fellow walkers can play in helping those in distress before emergency services arrive.

Mountain rescue teams continue to remind walkers to plan routes carefully and be aware of their physical limits before heading into the fells. They also encourage members of the public to call for help immediately if they encounter someone who appears to be in difficulty. The quick response from passers by in this case may have prevented the situation from becoming more serious.

The Lake District attracts millions of visitors each year, and rescue teams frequently respond to incidents involving injuries, exhaustion and medical emergencies. Volunteers remain on call throughout the year, often giving up their own time to help those in need. This latest rescue serves as another reminder of the value of community spirit and the professionalism of Cumbria's emergency responders.
