Furness General Hospital Raised to Highest Alert Level Amid Severe Patient Pressure

19 Apr 2026 Furness General Hospital Raised to Highest Alert Level Amid Severe Patient Pressure

Furness General Hospital in Barrow has been placed at its highest level of operational alert after health leaders reported severe pressure on services caused by rising patient numbers and reduced hospital capacity.

The University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay NHS Foundation Trust confirmed that the hospital has escalated to OPEL 4 status, a critical level used when services face major strain and require urgent system-wide support to maintain patient safety.

Hospital officials said the situation has been driven by a combination of high patient demand, limited bed availability due to ward closures linked to infection outbreaks, and delays in patient discharges and transfers.

At this level of escalation, additional measures are introduced to manage flow through the hospital, including prioritising emergency cases, speeding up safe discharges where possible, and reducing non-essential clinical activities to free up staff time.

Despite the pressure, the trust has reassured the public that essential services remain open and operational, and patients requiring urgent care should continue to seek medical attention. However, officials have urged the public to use appropriate healthcare services to help reduce unnecessary demand on A&E departments.

Health leaders emphasised that the alert reflects ongoing challenges across the wider NHS system, where hospitals continue to face seasonal pressures, staffing constraints, and increased demand for emergency care.
