Fire Damages Roof at Barrow Crematorium
A fire broke out at Thorncliffe Crematorium on Devonshire Road in Barrow on Thursday evening, prompting a large emergency response.
Cumbria Fire and Rescue Service received reports of smoke coming from the building at approximately 7:55pm. In response, six fire engines from Barrow, Ulverston, Walney and Millom were dispatched to the scene, along with a turntable ladder and senior officers.
Firefighters acted swiftly to bring the situation under control. Authorities later confirmed that the blaze was accidental and resulted in damage to part of the crematorium’s roof.
Emergency services are continuing to work with local council officials to assess the impact and provide reassurance to the community.
Officials acknowledged that the incident may be distressing for families connected to the site and expressed their support, while also thanking the public for their patience during the response.
