Bomb Squad Called After Suspected Ordnance Spotted on West Cumbrian Beach

02 May 2026 Bomb Squad Called After Suspected Ordnance Spotted on West Cumbrian Beach

A bomb disposal team was called to a West Cumbrian beach after suspected ordnance was discovered by a member of the public.

The incident took place on Friday, May 2, when emergency services were alerted to reports of a potentially dangerous object on the shoreline. Coastguard teams attended the scene and established a safety cordon while the item was assessed.

Specialist Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) officers were then requested to examine the object and determine whether it posed any risk to the public.

Such discoveries are not uncommon along parts of the Cumbrian coast, where shifting sands and tidal movement can uncover old military items or marine explosives that have been buried for decades.

Authorities temporarily secured the area to ensure public safety while investigations were carried out. No injuries were reported, and the public was advised to avoid the location until the situation was resolved.

Emergency services routinely remind the public that any suspicious items found on beaches should not be touched and should be reported immediately by calling 999.
