Kendal College Ofsted report highlights strengths and areas needing improvement

13 May 2026 Kendal College Ofsted report highlights strengths and areas needing improvement

Kendal College has received a mixed assessment in its latest Ofsted inspection report, with inspectors recognising positive aspects of student support and behaviour while also identifying areas requiring further improvement.

The report highlighted strengths in student behaviour, safeguarding, and personal development, praising the college for creating a supportive environment where learners feel safe and respected. Inspectors noted that many students benefit from helpful careers advice, enrichment activities, and strong pastoral support during their studies.

However, inspectors also identified weaknesses in certain areas of teaching, leadership, and course delivery. Some programmes were found to require improvement, particularly in relation to consistency of teaching standards and ensuring all learners make strong academic progress.

Kendal College, which serves students across South Cumbria, offers a wide range of further education courses, apprenticeships, vocational training, and higher education programmes. The institution plays a significant role in preparing local students for employment, university, and specialist careers within the region.

College leaders have acknowledged the findings and are expected to continue implementing improvement plans aimed at strengthening teaching quality and overall performance. Previous statements from college representatives have emphasised their commitment to addressing Ofsted recommendations and building on the institution’s existing strengths.

The inspection also recognised the college’s efforts to support students’ wellbeing and maintain effective safeguarding procedures, areas which continue to be viewed positively by inspectors.

Education leaders across Cumbria continue to face wider challenges linked to staffing pressures, funding, and changing qualification requirements, issues that have affected further education providers nationally in recent years.

Despite the concerns raised in the report, supporters of the college say Kendal College remains an important educational institution for the region, providing opportunities for thousands of students and apprentices each year.

As improvement work continues, the college is expected to focus on raising academic standards while maintaining the supportive learning environment that inspectors praised during the visit.
