China and Pakistan Reach New Broad Consensus to Strengthen Strategic Partnership

26 May 2026 China and Pakistan Reach New Broad Consensus to Strengthen Strategic Partnership

China and Pakistan have announced a renewed commitment to strengthen bilateral ties, describing their latest agreement as a “new broad consensus” aimed at deepening cooperation across economic, political, and strategic sectors.

The announcement followed a visit to Beijing by Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, during which he met Chinese President Xi Jinping and senior Chinese officials. Both sides agreed to expand collaboration under the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), a flagship infrastructure and investment programme linking China’s western regions with Pakistan’s ports and transport networks.

A key focus of the talks was accelerating the next phase of CPEC, with plans to upgrade transport corridors, strengthen industrial development, and further develop Gwadar port into a major regional trade hub. The two countries also discussed improving connectivity through major routes such as the Karakoram Highway and Khunjerab Pass, which serve as critical links between the two neighbours.

Officials also signalled openness to broader participation in CPEC projects, including potential involvement from third countries under agreed frameworks. This reflects both nations’ interest in expanding investment opportunities and increasing the project’s regional influence.

Security remained an important issue during discussions, with Pakistan reaffirming its commitment to protecting Chinese nationals and infrastructure working within its borders. Beijing has previously expressed concern over safety risks to personnel involved in development projects in Pakistan.

Beyond economic cooperation, the two countries also exchanged views on regional diplomacy and security issues. China acknowledged Pakistan’s engagement in regional peace efforts, while both sides reiterated support for continued dialogue and stability in conflict-affected regions.

The agreement reinforces what both governments frequently describe as an “all-weather” or “iron-clad” friendship, a relationship that has remained central to Pakistan’s foreign policy and an important pillar of China’s regional strategy.

Officials from both sides said the new understanding marks another step forward in strengthening long-term cooperation, with a particular emphasis on high-quality development, technological collaboration, and sustainable economic growth.
