Woman Twice Over Drink Drive Limit Crashed While Travelling From Funeral

29 Jun 2026 Woman Twice Over Drink Drive Limit Crashed While Travelling From Funeral

A Hawkshead woman has been disqualified from driving after crashing her vehicle while more than twice the legal alcohol limit. The incident happened after she had attended a funeral where she consumed alcohol. The case was heard before magistrates, who imposed penalties for the offence.

The court heard that the woman lost control of her vehicle before the collision, prompting police involvement. Officers carried out breath tests which showed she was well above the legal drink drive limit. She later admitted the offence during court proceedings.

Magistrates were told the defendant had been attending a funeral before getting behind the wheel despite consuming alcohol. The prosecution stressed that her decision to drive created a serious risk to herself and other road users. The court considered the circumstances of the crash before imposing a driving ban and financial penalties. Drink driving continues to be treated as a serious offence because of the danger it poses to the public.

Police said motorists should always arrange alternative transport if they have been drinking, regardless of the distance they intend to travel. Officers warned that alcohol significantly reduces reaction times and judgment, increasing the likelihood of serious collisions. They added that enforcement patrols remain focused on removing impaired drivers from the roads. Authorities hope strong penalties will deter others from making the same mistake.

The woman was sentenced in accordance with drink driving guidelines and will be prohibited from driving for the period ordered by the court. Officials said the outcome reflects the seriousness of offences involving alcohol behind the wheel. Road safety remains a key priority across Cumbria.

Police continue to urge motorists to plan ahead and never drive after consuming alcohol. They said responsible decisions can prevent tragedies and help keep roads safe for everyone. Anyone suspected of drink driving should be reported to the police immediately.
