19 Aug 2026 West Cumbrian Man Caught On Camera Breaking Into Garage

A Workington man has been sentenced after police caught him breaking into a garage in the town during the early hours of Sunday, August 16.

Officers attended the incident in Workington shortly after it was reported and arrested the man at the scene. The incident had been captured on police body worn video, providing officers with footage of the suspected burglary.

The man was identified as Marc McIvor, 37, of Coronation Drive, Workington. He was subsequently charged with burglary and remanded in custody overnight before appearing in court the following day.

McIvor appeared before Workington Magistrates’ Court on Monday, August 17, where he pleaded guilty to the burglary and was sentenced to a rehabilitation activity requirement. He was also ordered to pay court costs.

The case highlights the importance of security around garages, sheds and other outbuildings, which can be targeted by offenders because they often contain tools, equipment and other valuable belongings.

Police have advised residents to take steps to reduce the risk of burglary by ensuring that doors and windows on garages, sheds and other outbuildings are properly secured.

People are also being encouraged to avoid leaving valuable possessions in plain sight. Keeping items out of view can make outbuildings less attractive targets for opportunistic thieves.

The incident was dealt with quickly after officers attended the scene, with the body worn video footage helping establish what had taken place. The arrest meant the investigation progressed rapidly, leading to the court appearance the following day.

Residents across West Cumbria are being reminded to remain vigilant and report suspicious activity, particularly around properties and outbuildings during overnight hours.

Police advice includes checking locks regularly, securing windows and considering additional security measures where appropriate. Valuable tools and equipment should also be stored securely and kept away from areas where they can easily be seen from outside.

The case serves as another reminder that garages and sheds should be treated as part of a property's overall security rather than being left unsecured.
