Two people charged with multiple counts of theft in Carlisle
A man and a woman have been charged with multiple counts of theft following a proactive police investigation into retail crime in Carlisle.
The investigation was led by the Carlisle and Wigton Neighbourhood Policing Teams, who have been working closely with local businesses to tackle rising incidents of shop theft in the area.
A woman from Carlisle has been charged with a total of 16 offences, including eight counts of theft from a shop and eight counts of breaching a Criminal Behaviour Order (CBO). The order had previously been issued against her on September 23 last year, showing repeated offending despite legal restrictions.
A second suspect, a man from Carlisle, has also been charged with three counts of theft from a shop as part of the same investigation.
Both suspects were charged on Wednesday, April 8, following incidents reported across Carlisle over the past two weeks, highlighting a pattern of ongoing retail theft in the city centre and surrounding areas.
The woman has been remanded in custody and is due to appear at North Cumbria Magistrates’ Court on May 18, while the man is also scheduled to appear at the same court on the same date.
A Cumbria Police spokesperson said the case reflects ongoing efforts to use proactive policing tactics to target offenders and support local retailers affected by shoplifting. Officers also confirmed they will continue working with businesses to identify and deal with those responsible for repeated thefts.
The case forms part of wider policing action across Carlisle aimed at reducing retail crime and increasing safety for shop workers and businesses in the area.
