Two American Tourists Stabbed Near Athens Acropolis In Apparent Random Attack

Two American tourists were injured after a knife attack near the Acropolis in Athens, Greece, with police arresting a 60 year old Greek man who is believed to have carried out a random assault near one of the country's busiest tourist attractions.

The attack happened shortly after 8:00am local time on a pedestrian street close to the entrance of the Acropolis Museum, just as large numbers of visitors were arriving to avoid the summer heat. Witnesses reported scenes of panic as people fled the area while emergency services rushed to the scene.

According to Greek authorities, the victims were a Greek American couple. The man suffered a serious knife wound to his arm while attempting to protect the woman and required a tourniquet before being taken to hospital. The woman sustained a less severe injury to her leg. Police said neither victim's injuries were considered life threatening.

Police detained the suspect at the scene without further incident. Authorities said the man has a history of psychological problems and had reportedly been threatening passers by with a knife before the attack. Investigators have found no indication that the victims were specifically targeted, describing the incident as an apparent random assault.

Despite the attack, the Acropolis and surrounding archaeological sites remained open to visitors after the area was secured by police. The Acropolis is Greece's most visited historical landmark and attracts millions of tourists each year. Violent attacks in the area are considered highly unusual.

The suspect was expected to appear before a prosecutor later the same day to face formal charges. Greek authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the attack while reviewing the suspect's background and mental health history.

Officials have urged visitors to remain calm, stressing that the incident appears to be isolated. Security patrols around major tourist attractions in Athens remain in place as the investigation continues.
