22 Apr 2026 Prolific Thief Stole £350 from Dalton Co-op to Fund Drug Habit

A prolific thief who stole around £350 worth of goods from a Co-op store in Dalton has been sentenced after admitting the offences were linked to his drug habit.

The court heard that the offender targeted the Dalton Co-op, repeatedly taking items over a period of time. The stolen goods included everyday products, contributing to a growing total that eventually reached hundreds of pounds.

During proceedings, it was revealed that the man’s actions were driven by a dependence on drugs, which had significantly impacted his behaviour and decision making. The prosecution outlined a pattern of repeat offending, highlighting concerns over ongoing criminal activity.

Magistrates were told that the thefts were not isolated, with the आरोपी having a history of similar offences, reinforcing his status as a persistent offender. The court also heard that his addiction had played a central role in fuelling the crimes.

In sentencing, the judge emphasised the seriousness of retail theft and its impact on local businesses, particularly smaller community stores. At the same time, attention was drawn to the underlying issue of substance abuse, which continues to be a factor in many such cases.

The case highlights the ongoing challenge faced by retailers and authorities in tackling shoplifting linked to addiction, as well as the broader need for support and intervention to address the root causes of offending.
