Police Seek Key Witness in Investigation into Carlisle Purse Theft

09 Jun 2026 Police Seek Key Witness in Investigation into Carlisle Purse Theft

Police in Carlisle have appealed to the public for assistance in identifying and locating a potential witness who may have crucial information regarding a theft investigation in the city.

The appeal relates to the theft of a purse that was reported stolen from a customer at Bar 32 on Botch ergate, one of Carlisle's busiest nightlife areas. The incident occurred at approximately 11:35 p.m. on April 19, during a busy weekend evening when the venue was occupied by numerous patrons.

Investigators have released an image of a woman they believe could assist with their inquiries. While officers have emphasized that the woman is not suspected of any wrongdoing, they believe she may have witnessed events surrounding the theft or possess information that could prove valuable to the ongoing investigation.

According to police, the theft took place inside the popular city-centre venue, and officers have since been reviewing available evidence, including CCTV footage and witness accounts. The release of the image forms part of efforts to establish a clearer picture of the circumstances surrounding the incident.

The victim reportedly discovered that their purse had been taken while at the premises, prompting a police investigation. Authorities have not disclosed details regarding the contents or value of the stolen property but have stressed the importance of gathering all available information to identify those responsible.

Police are urging anyone who recognizes the woman featured in the appeal, or anyone who was present at the venue around the time of the incident, to come forward. Investigators believe even seemingly minor details could help establish key facts and assist in bringing the inquiry to a successful conclusion.

The appeal highlights the increasing role of public cooperation and CCTV evidence in solving theft-related crimes. Officers regularly rely on witness testimony and information from members of the public to help identify individuals who may have observed incidents or possess knowledge that is not immediately apparent to investigators.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Cumbria Police on 101 and quote log 4 of April 20. Authorities have reiterated that all information will be treated seriously as they continue efforts to resolve the case and recover the stolen property.
