New Driver Arrested After Failing Drug Test Just One Day After Passing Driving Test

07 Jul 2026 New Driver Arrested After Failing Drug Test Just One Day After Passing Driving Test

A newly qualified driver has been arrested after failing a roadside drug test only one day after successfully passing their driving examination.

The incident took place near Kendal in Cumbria, where police officers stopped the vehicle after becoming concerned about the driver's manner of driving.According to Cumbria Police, officers carried out a roadside drug screening, which returned a positive result for cocaine. The driver was immediately arrested and later released under investigation while authorities await the results of a laboratory blood test, which will determine whether any further legal action will be taken.

The arrest occurred during the opening week of Operation Spotlight, a nationwide road safety initiative aimed at reducing serious road traffic incidents. The campaign focuses on the Fatal Four driving offences, including speeding, using a mobile phone while driving, failing to wear a seatbelt, and driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

Police have not released the identity or age of the driver, and the investigation remains ongoing. Authorities have reminded motorists that driving while impaired by drugs or alcohol significantly increases the risk of serious collisions and can result in criminal prosecution, driving bans, and imprisonment if convicted.

Road safety officials continue to encourage all drivers, particularly those who have recently obtained their licences, to act responsibly and comply with traffic laws. They say initiatives such as Operation Spotlight are designed to improve road safety and prevent avoidable accidents by identifying dangerous driving behaviour before it leads to tragedy.
