Multi-Agency Operation Targets Waste Crime Across North and West Cumbria
A major multi-agency operation has been launched across north and west Cumbria to tackle waste crime and strengthen enforcement against illegal dumping and unlicensed waste transport.
The intelligence-led operation brought together Cumberland Council, Cumbria Constabulary and the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA), targeting vehicles suspected of being involved in the movement of waste linked to criminal activity.
During the operation, officers stopped selected vehicles and directed them to a designated inspection area for detailed checks. These included examinations of waste types being carried, carrier registration details, transfer documentation, driver licensing, and vehicle safety standards. DVSA officers also carried out compliance and roadworthiness checks.
Authorities say waste crime continues to pose a significant environmental, financial and community risk across the UK. Nationally, it is estimated to cost local authorities millions of pounds each year, while also contributing to issues such as fly-tipping and unsafe disposal practices.
Cumberland Council said it receives a steady flow of complaints and intelligence reports relating to suspected illegal waste activity. Officials stressed that such operations are essential to protect legitimate businesses and reduce environmental harm.
Speaking after the operation, Councillor Denise Rollo, Executive Member for Sustainable, Resilient and Connected Places, said the council maintains a zero-tolerance approach to waste crime and will continue working closely with partner agencies to enforce the law.
Cumbria Police and DVSA representatives also supported the initiative, highlighting the importance of joint working to identify offenders, improve road safety, and ensure compliance within the waste transport sector.
Authorities say further enforcement activity is expected as part of ongoing efforts to disrupt illegal waste networks and protect communities across the county.
