13 Apr 2026 Monkey Discovered in Car Boot on M6 as Two Arrested

Police have recovered a monkey from the boot of a vehicle on the M6 near Carlisle, in an unusual incident that has raised concerns over illegal animal possession.

The discovery was made at around 6:30pm on Wednesday when officers stopped the car and found the small primate, believed to be a marmoset, concealed inside the boot.

Two people were arrested following the incident. The driver was detained on suspicion of drug driving and operating a vehicle in a dangerous condition, while a passenger was arrested on suspicion of illegally possessing a primate.

Authorities have confirmed that the monkey will be transferred to a specialist animal facility, where it will receive appropriate care.

Police have not released further details but investigations are ongoing. The case has also highlighted concerns about the illegal trade and improper transport of exotic animals.
