Mexican Mayor Shot Dead Inside Town Hall In Morelos
Authorities in Mexico have launched a murder investigation after Temoac Mayor Valentín Lavín Romero was shot dead inside the municipal government building in the central state of Morelos, marking another deadly attack against a local public official.
The shooting took place inside Temoac Town Hall, where Mayor Lavín was reportedly carrying out official duties when an armed attacker entered the building and opened fire. Emergency responders arrived quickly, but the mayor was pronounced dead at the scene after suffering multiple gunshot wounds.
Local authorities secured the municipal offices while police and forensic investigators began collecting evidence. Officials have not yet confirmed the identity of the suspect or whether anyone has been arrested in connection with the killing.
The Morelos State Prosecutor's Office has opened a homicide investigation and is examining several possible motives. Investigators are reviewing security camera footage, interviewing witnesses, and analysing forensic evidence recovered from the scene.
Governor Margarita González Saravia condemned the attack, describing it as an assault on public institutions and the rule of law. She extended condolences to the mayor's family and pledged that state authorities would work alongside federal investigators to identify those responsible and bring them to justice.
The killing has once again highlighted the dangers faced by elected officials in Mexico, where mayors, councillors, and political candidates have increasingly become targets of organised criminal groups seeking influence over local governments. Violence against municipal leaders has remained a major security concern in several regions of the country.
Residents of Temoac expressed shock following the attack, with municipal services temporarily suspended as officials observed a period of mourning. Security around local government buildings has also been increased while the investigation continues.
Federal and state authorities say every available investigative resource will be used to determine the motive behind the assassination and whether it was connected to organised crime, political activity, or another dispute.
