Massive Multi Agency Crackdown in Cumbria Sees More Than 1,400 Illegal Vapes Seized and Six Arrests in Workington and Barrow

22 May 2026 Massive Multi Agency Crackdown in Cumbria Sees More Than 1,400 Illegal Vapes Seized and Six Arrests in Workington and Barrow

A large-scale enforcement operation across Cumbria has led to six arrests and the confiscation of over 1,400 illegal vaping products as authorities intensified efforts to tackle organised crime linked to illicit tobacco and vape sales.

The coordinated raids were carried out this week in the towns of Workington and Barrow by a joint task force involving Cumbria Police, Immigration Compliance and Enforcement officers, and Westmorland and Furness Council Trading Standards.

During operations in Barrow on May 19, officials visited several high street businesses, including mini-marts, nail salons, and car washes. Trading Standards officers focused on identifying illegal tobacco and vaping products, while immigration officers conducted checks related to unlawful working practices, immigration offences, and potential modern slavery concerns.

Authorities confirmed that 1,442 illegal vapes were seized for breaching the UK’s Tobacco and Related Products Regulations 2016. Four individuals were arrested in Barrow for alleged breaches of bail conditions.

A second day of operations took place in Workington on May 20, targeting businesses including convenience stores and barber shops. Two additional arrests were made over suspected immigration offences, while officers also confiscated counterfeit clothing, cigarettes, and further illegal vaping products.

Detective Inspector Sam Johnson of Cumbria Police said the operation delivered “a major impact” on criminal groups seeking to profit from illegal trade in the region. He stressed that illegal vape sales are not only a public health concern but are also frequently linked to organised crime, exploitation of vulnerable workers, anti-social behaviour, and violence.

Authorities said intelligence provided by local residents played a key role in supporting the raids and encouraged the public to continue reporting suspicious businesses involved in illicit sales.
