Man Jailed for Strangling Pregnant Woman

31 Mar 2026 Man Jailed for Strangling Pregnant Woman

A 34-year-old man has been jailed after carrying out a violent assault on a pregnant woman in Carlisle.

Steven Farren, of Westmorland Street, was sentenced to three years in prison at Carlisle Crown Court after pleading guilty to charges of actual bodily harm and intentional strangulation.

The court heard that in November 2025, Farren repeatedly assaulted the victim, slapping and punching her and striking her in the stomach during the attack. The woman, who was pregnant at the time, feared for both her life and the safety of her unborn child.

The following day, the violence escalated when Farren strangled the woman while she was on a sofa, restricting her breathing and again leaving her terrified for her life.

The victim managed to escape the property, after which a friend contacted police. When officers attended, Farren reportedly behaved aggressively and made threats towards them.

Following the sentencing, a detective involved in the case said the attack had placed the victim in extreme fear and caused multiple injuries, highlighting the serious risks associated with strangulation, particularly given the victim’s pregnancy.

Police reiterated that such offences are treated with the utmost seriousness and that action will always be taken to bring perpetrators to justice.
