Man Issued Warning After Asking Passers-By For Cash In Workington.

A man has been issued with a formal Community Protection Warning following reports of persistent anti-social behaviour in Workington town centre.

Officers from Allerdale Police took action after the man was repeatedly approaching passers-by and asking them for money. Police said the behaviour had caused people to feel harassed and was having an unacceptable impact on residents, businesses and visitors.

The warning is intended as an early intervention, allowing officers to clearly explain what behaviour must stop. Police said further formal action could be taken if the conduct continues. A Community Protection Warning can be used where behaviour may not, on its own, amount to a criminal offence but is considered persistent and is having an unacceptable impact on people living, working or visiting an area.

Police said the measures are designed to address persistent anti-social behaviour and give officers powers to intervene before the situation escalates. If the behaviour continues, officers could issue a Community Protection Notice. Such a notice can impose reasonable requirements aimed at preventing the conduct from happening again.

The police force has chosen not to identify the man involved, but said it wanted to raise awareness of the action available to officers when persistent anti-social behaviour is reported in the town. Residents, businesses and visitors in Workington are being encouraged to report incidents of anti-social behaviour where they believe the legal threshold for police intervention may be met. Anyone experiencing anti-social behaviour can report incidents through the police's online reporting service or by calling 101.
