Lake District town to trial security cameras at public toilet after antisocial behaviour
A town in the Lake District is introducing a trial of security cameras at a public toilet facility in response to ongoing antisocial behaviour concerns.
Local authorities confirmed that the move comes after repeated incidents of misuse, vandalism, and inappropriate behaviour in and around the public convenience. These issues have caused concern among residents and visitors alike.
The proposed trial will involve installing CCTV cameras near the entrance and surrounding areas of the facility, rather than inside, to ensure privacy is maintained while still monitoring activity.
Officials say the aim is to deter unacceptable behaviour and improve public safety, particularly in a location that is frequently used by tourists visiting the Lake District.
A spokesperson highlighted that the behaviour seen has been described as “completely unacceptable”, reinforcing the need for action to protect public amenities and ensure they remain accessible and safe for everyone.
The council will review the effectiveness of the trial after a set period, considering whether the cameras help reduce incidents and improve the overall environment.
Authorities are also encouraging the public to report any suspicious or inappropriate behaviour, stressing that maintaining these facilities is a shared responsibility between officials and the community.
The initiative forms part of wider efforts to tackle antisocial behaviour across the area and maintain the reputation of the Lake District as a safe and welcoming destination.
