Four Arrested and Nitrous Oxide Seized During Appleby Horse Fair Policing Operation
Four people were arrested and a quantity of nitrous oxide, commonly known as “laughing gas,” was seized as part of a multi-agency policing operation at the 2026 Appleby Horse Fair.
The arrests were made during enforcement activity carried out by police and partner agencies as thousands of visitors gathered for the annual event, one of the largest traditional Gypsy, Roma and Traveller gatherings in Europe. Authorities said the operation aims to prevent crime, improve public safety, and address anti-social behaviour throughout the fair.
Police officers have maintained a significant presence at the fair, using a range of measures including vehicle checks and targeted patrols. The seizure of nitrous oxide forms part of wider efforts to remove illegal and potentially harmful items from the event. In separate operations, officers have also confiscated prohibited goods and taken action against criminal activity linked to the fair.
The Appleby Horse Fair attracts around 10,000 members of the Gypsy, Roma and Traveller communities, along with tens of thousands of additional visitors each year. The event is renowned for horse trading, cultural celebrations, traditional music, and community gatherings.
Police officials stressed that the vast majority of attendees are law-abiding and attend the fair to enjoy its traditions and social activities. However, they emphasized that enforcement action will continue throughout the event to ensure the safety of all visitors and local residents.
The operation remains ongoing, with officers working alongside local authorities and partner agencies to monitor activity and respond to incidents as the fair continues.
