Fines Issued to Illegal Campers in Lake District Crackdown

29 Apr 2026 Fines Issued to Illegal Campers in Lake District Crackdown

A number of visitors have been issued £100 fines after being caught illegally camping in the Lake District as part of ongoing enforcement patrols by local authorities and police.

The action was taken after officers identified groups camping in breach of Public Space Protection Orders (PSPOs), which are designed to prevent environmental damage and anti-social behaviour in sensitive areas of the national park.

During patrols across popular locations, including areas around Ullswater, enforcement teams found evidence of unauthorised camping, littering, and damaged ground. In some cases, campers had left behind rubbish, burnt waste, and camping equipment, failing to comply with “leave no trace” principles.

Authorities said those involved were instructed to clear their sites, but further inspections found that some areas had still not been left in an acceptable condition. As a result, fixed penalty notices were issued.

Westmorland and Furness Council, working alongside Cumbria Police and land management organisations, said the patrols are part of wider efforts to tackle irresponsible “fly camping” and protect the natural landscape from harm.

Officials stressed that while wild camping is traditionally tolerated in certain remote parts of the Lake District when done responsibly, camping in restricted or sensitive areas without permission is not allowed and can lead to enforcement action.

The council confirmed that patrols will continue across hotspot locations, particularly during busy holiday periods, to ensure compliance and protect the environment for visitors and wildlife alike.
