Dangerous Carlisle Offender Jailed After Street Stabbing and Brutal Attack on Crime Prevention Volunteer

20 Jun 2026 Dangerous Carlisle Offender Jailed After Street Stabbing and Brutal Attack on Crime Prevention Volunteer

A Carlisle man has been jailed after stabbing a member of the public during a late night incident in the city. Marc Proudfoot, 33, attacked the victim on Botchergate on January 4 after reportedly hassling a woman in the street. The victim suffered a significant stab wound to the abdomen and required hospital treatment.

Carlisle Crown Court heard that Proudfoot lunged at the man with a knife after he approached to intervene. Witnesses described blood pouring from the victim's wound following the attack. Prosecutors said the knife used was one of several blades stolen from a local supermarket earlier that day. After his arrest, another knife was discovered hidden in his sock.

The court also heard details of a separate violent attack on a crime prevention volunteer linked to the Carlisle Business Crime Reduction Partnership. The volunteer had attempted to stop thefts in the city centre when Proudfoot became aggressive and threatening. He later punched, kicked and repeatedly assaulted the man while he was on the ground, causing multiple injuries.

In addition to those offences, Proudfoot admitted assaulting emergency workers and causing further disruption through repeated false emergency calls. The defendant also spat at a police officer while in custody. Another incident saw him attack a security officer at Cumberland Infirmary during the Christmas period.

Judge Nicholas Barker described Proudfoot as a dangerous offender and imposed a prison sentence of six years and eight months. The judge said the stabbing involved a determined strike with a blade against a man who posed no significant threat. Proudfoot will also be subject to an extended licence period after his release from custody.
