Cumbria Police Launch Ransomware Warning as Cyber Crime Threat Continues to Grow

05 Jul 2026 Cumbria Police Launch Ransomware Warning as Cyber Crime Threat Continues to Grow

Cumbria Police has launched a countywide campaign to help organisations protect themselves against ransomware attacks. Digital crime specialists are offering advice and practical support to schools, businesses, charities and members of the public. The initiative comes as cyber crime continues to rise across the UK.

The force's Cyber and Digital Crime Unit has been promoting cyber awareness throughout a national week long campaign focused on ransomware prevention. Officers have already contacted hundreds of organisations across Cumbria and plan to extend their outreach to the hospitality sector in the coming weeks. The campaign aims to improve cyber resilience before criminals have the chance to strike. Ransomware remains one of the most serious cyber threats facing organisations nationwide.

Police explained that ransomware attacks occur when criminals exploit weaknesses in computer systems before installing malicious software that locks users out of their devices and data. Victims are then presented with a ransom demand in exchange for restoring access to their files. Such attacks can severely disrupt daily operations and place sensitive information at risk.

Detective Constable Lee Fearn said the unit is committed to helping organisations strengthen their cyber defences and respond effectively to emerging threats. He highlighted that police can provide cyber awareness sessions, practical guidance, incident reporting advice and educational support for schools, parents and teachers. The force stressed that its work is intended to complement existing IT service providers rather than replace them. Prevention and education remain central to the strategy.

Experts are encouraging organisations to improve their cyber resilience by reviewing security measures, training staff and preparing response plans before an attack occurs. Early action can significantly reduce the risk of disruption and financial loss. Police say stronger awareness is one of the most effective defences against cyber criminals.

Cumbria Police has invited organisations seeking additional support to contact its Cyber and Digital Crime Unit for advice and guidance. Officials hope the campaign will help reduce cyber crime across the county while ensuring businesses and public services are better prepared for future threats. The initiative reflects growing national concern over the increasing frequency and impact of ransomware attacks. Cyber security experts continue to urge organisations to remain vigilant as digital threats evolve.
