Cumberland to See Rollout of Powered CCTV Cameras to Boost Public Safety

10 Apr 2026 Cumberland to See Rollout of Powered CCTV Cameras to Boost Public Safety

Cumberland Council has announced a new initiative to expand its CCTV surveillance network with the installation of powered CCTV cameras in selected public areas across the region.

The move is part of the council’s wider commitment to improving community safety, preventing crime, and supporting law enforcement agencies with better access to real-time and recorded footage.

According to the council, the new cameras will be strategically placed in areas where there is a higher need for monitoring, helping to deter antisocial behaviour and improve the overall feeling of safety among residents and visitors.

The CCTV system is designed to provide continuous monitoring, with footage being used for crime prevention, incident investigation, and evidence collection when required. The council works closely with the police to ensure that any relevant footage can be accessed quickly in the event of an incident.

Officials say the rollout will also support wider public protection efforts, including monitoring of council-owned buildings and public spaces where security concerns have been identified.

The council emphasised that all surveillance operations will follow strict data protection rules. CCTV footage will be stored securely and only used for legitimate purposes such as law enforcement, safety monitoring, and crime detection.

This expansion is part of Cumberland’s ongoing strategy to use modern technology to create safer communities and ensure public spaces remain secure and well-managed.

Residents are expected to benefit from increased reassurance as more areas come under CCTV coverage, particularly in locations identified as higher risk.
