Carlisle Drivers Face 10 Nights of Road Closures as Major Resurfacing Work Begins
Drivers in Carlisle are being advised to prepare for overnight travel disruption after authorities announced a series of night road closures starting next week for major resurfacing work.
Cumberland Council confirmed that Willow Holme Road will be closed overnight from Monday, May 11, as crews begin a large scale road resurfacing project aimed at improving driving conditions and long term road safety.
According to officials, the work is expected to continue for around 10 working days, depending on weather conditions and site requirements.
The road will close from 8pm each evening, with resurfacing operations continuing until 3am. Authorities said the road would remain shut until 5am to allow for site clean up and material curing before reopening to traffic each morning.
Emergency service vehicles will still be allowed access throughout the closure period, while pedestrians and dismounted cyclists will also be permitted through the affected area.
Council representatives said the overnight schedule was chosen to minimise daytime traffic disruption for commuters, local businesses, and residents. Drivers are being urged to follow diversion signs, allow additional travel time, and plan journeys carefully during the works.
The resurfacing project forms part of wider infrastructure improvements taking place across Carlisle over the coming weeks, including bridge repairs, gas network upgrades, and additional maintenance schemes across key routes in the city.
Officials say the work will help create safer roads, smoother journeys, and improved driving conditions for thousands of motorists using the area each day.
