Barrow Mum Illegally Claimed Nearly £20,000 in Benefits

Barrow Mum Illegally Claimed Nearly £20,000 in Benefits

A mother from Barrow has been convicted after fraudulently claiming nearly £20,000 in Universal Credit payments.

The court heard that the claims were dishonest from the outset, with the woman providing false information in order to receive benefits she was not entitled to. The fraudulent activity continued over an extended period, allowing the total amount to reach close to £20,000.

An investigation by the Department for Work and Pensions uncovered inconsistencies in her claims, leading to legal action. Evidence presented in court showed that the payments had been obtained through deliberate misrepresentation.

During proceedings, it was highlighted that benefit fraud is taken seriously due to its impact on public funds and the welfare system. The length of time over which the fraud occurred was also noted as a key factor in the case.

The woman has now been sentenced, with the court making clear that such offences will result in consequences to deter others from committing similar fraud.

Authorities continue to urge the public to provide accurate information when making benefit claims and warn that fraud investigations are ongoing across the region.
