Barrow man banned from driving after testing over legal cannabis limit in Ford Focus
A Barrow man has been banned from driving after he was found to be over the legal cannabis limit while driving a Ford Focus according to court proceedings.
The case involved a drug-driving offence, where police discovered that the driver had levels of Delta-9 THC (the active compound in cannabis) in his system exceeding the legal threshold. In the UK, drivers must remain below strict limits for controlled drugs, and exceeding these limits is a criminal offence regardless of whether impairment is proven.
The man was stopped by police officers during routine checks and later subjected to a blood test, which confirmed that he was over the prescribed limit for cannabis. Even small amounts of THC can remain in the system for a period of time, but UK law focuses on a strict numeric threshold rather than impairment alone.
As a result, he was brought before magistrates and disqualified from driving, along with other penalties such as fines and court costs, which are common in drug-driving cases across the UK.
Similar cases show that even drivers who report using cannabis hours or days earlier can still be found over the limit, as THC can remain detectable in blood for extended periods.
Authorities continue to warn that drug-driving laws are strictly enforced, and anyone caught exceeding the legal limits faces automatic prosecution and driving bans, regardless of intent or self-reported impairment.
The case highlights ongoing concerns around cannabis use and road safety, particularly as enforcement increases across Cumbria and the wider UK.
