Barrow Driver Jailed After Racing at 92mph While More Than Eight Times Over Drug Limit

04 Jul 2026 Barrow Driver Jailed After Racing at 92mph While More Than Eight Times Over Drug Limit

A Barrow driver has been jailed after driving at speeds of up to 92mph on the A590 while more than eight times over the legal drug-driving limit. The dangerous incident placed other road users at serious risk and resulted in a custodial sentence. The case highlights the continued dangers of drug-driving on Cumbria's roads.

The court heard that police stopped the motorist after witnessing the high-speed driving. Subsequent tests revealed the driver had a level of drugs in his system more than eight times the legal limit. Prosecutors said his reckless behaviour created a significant danger to other motorists and passengers.

During sentencing, the judge described the offence as extremely serious, stressing that driving while heavily impaired by drugs can have devastating consequences. The driver was jailed and also received a lengthy driving ban. He will be required to meet all legal requirements before being allowed to drive again after the disqualification period.

Cumbria Police welcomed the sentence, saying it sends a strong message that dangerous and drug-impaired driving will not be tolerated. Officers continue to carry out proactive enforcement across the county to identify motorists who pose a risk to others through speeding, drink-driving or drug-driving.

Road safety campaigners have also urged drivers never to get behind the wheel after taking illegal drugs or any medication that affects their ability to drive safely. They say responsible decisions can prevent serious collisions, save lives and make the region's roads safer for everyone.
