Barrow Council and Police Roll Out Unusual New Approach to Tackle Anti‑Social Behaviour

30 Mar 2026 Barrow Council and Police Roll Out Unusual New Approach to Tackle Anti‑Social Behaviour

Local authorities and police in Barrow are using a new and unusual approach to tackle anti‑social behaviour affecting communities in the area. The initiative brings together law enforcement, council powers and community safety measures to respond more effectively to reports of disruptive behaviour in identified hotspots.

As part of this strategy, officers have introduced a dispersal order at key times, allowing them to direct individuals away from areas where anti‑social behaviour has been prevalent. This legal tool aims to reduce incidents by giving police authority to move people on if they are causing or likely to cause harassment, alarm or distress to local residents. The order runs at set times during evenings and early mornings in priority zones, increasing oversight during periods when issues have typically been reported.

In addition to the use of dispersal powers, authorities have increased patrols in hotspot locations and are working closely with community partners to improve engagement and reduce tensions. Extra patrols help provide visible reassurance to residents while acting as a deterrent to those engaging in nuisance behaviour. Authorities continue to encourage the public to report incidents so that officers can identify problem areas and respond appropriately.

This initiative reflects a broader effort to protect community well‑being and create an environment where people feel safe in their neighbourhoods. It also highlights how combining legal powers with community partnership work can be part of a focused response to anti‑social behaviour issues.
