Antisocial behaviour still an issue in Barrow despite cameras

28 Apr 2026 Antisocial behaviour still an issue in Barrow despite cameras

Antisocial behaviour (ASB) is still being reported in Barrow town centre even after the introduction of CCTV cameras and community policing measures according to local councillors.

The cameras were installed as part of efforts by Cumbria Police and local partners to reduce issues such as vandalism, shop damage, and youth-related disorder. However, councillors say that while there has been some improvement, the problem has not been fully solved.

Reports include incidents of planters being knocked over, shop windows being damaged, and general nuisance behaviour in the town centre and nearby areas such as Barrow Park.

Councillors have acknowledged that visible policing and CCTV have helped reduce some incidents, but they also stressed that offenders often move locations or continue behaviour when police presence is reduced.

A local councillor highlighted that although measures have had an impact, antisocial behaviour is still present and shifting between areas, especially during different times of the year.

Authorities have previously installed CCTV systems and increased patrols as part of wider “hotspot” policing strategies, aimed at deterring crime and improving public safety in key areas of Barrow.

Police and council officials continue to encourage residents to report incidents and provide information to help target enforcement and prevention measures more effectively.

Overall, the situation shows that while CCTV and policing initiatives have helped reduce antisocial behaviour, it remains an ongoing issue in parts of Barrow, requiring continued monitoring and community action.
