Absi Ahmed Mohammad drowned in Lake District tarn inquest told

24 Apr 2026 Absi Ahmed Mohammad drowned in Lake District tarn inquest told

An inquest has been told that Absi Ahmed Mohammad a 17-year-old teenager tragically drowned while swimming in a tarn in the Lake District. The incident occurred at High Dam Tarn a well-known beauty spot popular with visitors and swimmers.

The hearing was told that the teenager, who was from Poulton-le-Fylde, had been enjoying a day out with friends before entering the water. During the swim, he is believed to have got into difficulty and disappeared beneath the surface.

Emergency services were called to the scene, triggering a major multi-agency response involving police, coastguard, mountain rescue, ambulance, and fire services. Specialist divers later recovered his body after an extensive search operation that lasted several hours.

The coroner’s court heard that the medical cause of death was confirmed as drowning following a post-mortem examination. The death was described as tragic and unnatural, meaning a full inquest process is required to establish the exact circumstances.

It was also suggested that factors such as cold water shock may have played a role, a condition that can quickly affect breathing and movement when entering cold water. The court heard that one of his friends attempted to help but was unable to rescue him due to the dangerous conditions.

The inquest has been adjourned to allow further evidence to be gathered, including statements from witnesses, police, and emergency responders. A future hearing date is expected once all relevant information has been reviewed.

Tributes have been paid to Absi Ahmed Mohammad, who was described as a “bright, kind and funny young man” with a promising future ahead. His death has had a profound impact on his family, friends, and local community, with many calling for improved water safety measures at the site to prevent similar tragedies.

Authorities have reiterated the importance of water safety awareness, particularly in open water locations like the Lake District, where conditions can change rapidly and pose serious risks even to confident swimmers.
