Speedway Star Dan Bewley Hospitalised After Horror Crash in Denmark
West Cumbrian speedway star Dan Bewley is recovering in a Danish hospital after being involved in a frightening crash during a league fixture in Outrup, Denmark, on Wednesday evening.
Bewley, who was racing for Region Varde against Slangerup, reportedly lost control of his bike moments after the start of the opening heat. Witnesses at the track suggested a possible mechanical failure caused the bike to straighten unexpectedly before the rider crashed heavily into the first bend safety fence at high speed.
The impact caused significant damage to the air fence surrounding the circuit, leading organisers to abandon the meeting shortly afterwards. Medical teams rushed onto the track before Bewley was transported to hospital for treatment.
In a message shared from hospital, Bewley confirmed he had suffered a broken femur along with a compressed vertebra in his back. Despite the severity of the injuries, the British rider said he was grateful the accident had not been worse.
The crash came on Bewley’s 27th birthday and represents a major setback during what had been an impressive season for the British star. The Maryport-born rider finished third in last year’s Speedway Grand Prix standings and had made a strong start to the current campaign, recently reaching the final in Landshut and helping Great Britain qualify for the Speedway World Cup final.
Bewley is widely regarded as one of Britain’s leading speedway talents and has previously overcome serious injuries during his career. In 2018, he suffered multiple fractures in a major crash at Workington that sidelined him for months.
Supporters, fellow riders and clubs from across the speedway world have since sent messages of support as Bewley begins his recovery in Denmark.
