Wigton Man Found Guilty Of Murdering His Father

A Wigton man has been convicted of murdering his father following a trial at Carlisle Crown Court after Christmas last year.

A jury found Brian James Stanley Smith, 33, guilty of murdering his 73 year old father, Stanley Smith, whose body was discovered at his home in Silloth on 22 December 2025. The verdict followed a trial that examined the events leading up to the pensioner's death.

During the trial, prosecutors told the court that Stanley Smith died after sustained pressure was applied to his neck during a violent confrontation with his son. The prosecution argued that what began as an argument escalated when "anger took over", resulting in the fatal assault.

Evidence presented to jurors included CCTV footage, witness testimony, text messages, voice notes, and forensic findings. A neighbour reported hearing loud shouting and sounds of a struggle before everything suddenly fell silent.

Brian Smith denied murdering his father and claimed he had only restrained him after being attacked. He told police that his father collapsed unexpectedly and later said he moved the body before contacting emergency services the following morning.

Medical evidence presented by pathologists concluded that Stanley Smith died from pressure applied to his neck. Prosecutors argued that injuries found on the victim's body were consistent with him being restrained from behind for a prolonged period.

Following the guilty verdict, the court remanded Brian Smith in custody ahead of sentencing. The judge thanked jurors for their careful consideration of the evidence during the trial, which had lasted more than a week.

Cumbria Police welcomed the conviction, stating that the investigation had relied on extensive forensic examination and witness evidence to establish the circumstances surrounding Stanley Smith's death. Detectives said they hoped the verdict would provide some measure of justice for the victim's family.
