Man Admits Fraud After Using Fake £20 Notes At Ulverston Businesses
A man has admitted a series of fraud offences after using fake Scottish £20 notes at several independent businesses in Ulverston town centre, prompting a swift response from Cumbria Police. Officers acted within minutes of receiving reports and quickly arrested the suspect before further businesses could be targeted.
Police said they received reports on July 6 that a man had been visiting local shops and purchasing low value items using counterfeit £20 notes. The scheme was designed to obtain genuine cash as change while passing off the fake banknotes as legitimate currency.
An officer from the Ulverston Community Policing Team arrived at the scene within three minutes of the initial report. The suspect was spotted attempting to hand over another suspicious note at a local butcher's shop, where officers detained him and carried out a search. During the search, police recovered several counterfeit notes along with items that had been purchased from local businesses.
The man was arrested and taken into custody, where he later admitted to four counts of fraud and two counts of attempted fraud during a police interview. Investigators said the admissions brought a swift conclusion to the case and helped officers begin returning property to the affected businesses.
Within 24 hours, officers had returned the cash and goods obtained through the fraudulent transactions to the local shops that had been targeted. Police praised the rapid response and cooperation between officers and business owners, which prevented further losses and ensured the suspect was quickly brought to justice.
Cumbria Police also issued a warning to anyone considering travelling into the area to commit crime, stating that officers will continue to respond quickly to protect local communities. Businesses have been encouraged to remain vigilant, familiarise themselves with the security features of genuine banknotes, and report any suspected counterfeit currency immediately.
