Windermere Jetty Museum Set to Host Huge Family Science Festival in Lake District

15 May 2026 Windermere Jetty Museum Set to Host Huge Family Science Festival in Lake District

The Windermere Jetty Museum is preparing to host an exciting science festival designed to inspire visitors of all ages with hands on activities, live demonstrations, and interactive learning experiences.

The popular event will take place across the museum’s lakeside site in Bowness on Windermere and is expected to attract families, students, and science enthusiasts from across Cumbria and beyond. Organisers say the festival will combine education and entertainment in a unique setting beside England’s largest natural lake.

Festival organisers have confirmed a packed schedule featuring STEM workshops, science talks, ecology activities, and live performances from well known science communicators. Highlights include presentations from Science Rapper Jon Chase, weather forecasting sessions led by the Met Office, and canoe safaris exploring the natural environment around Windermere.

One of the most anticipated attractions is the “Big Float” challenge, where participants build and test full sized cardboard boats on the lake. Visitors are also being encouraged to attend in creative science fiction themed costumes as part of the family friendly celebrations.

The event will be hosted at Windermere Jetty Museum, an award winning museum known for preserving the rich boating history of Windermere. The museum regularly hosts educational exhibitions and heritage activities connected to engineering, technology, and local history.

Organisers say the festival aims to make science more accessible and engaging for children and young people by combining learning with creativity and outdoor exploration. They believe the event will help encourage curiosity and inspire future interest in science and innovation.

Tourism leaders have also welcomed the festival, describing it as another major attraction for the Lake District visitor economy. Local businesses, cafes, and accommodation providers are expected to benefit from increased visitor numbers during the event weekend.

Festival entry is included with standard museum admission, with discounted rates available for children, students, and families. Lakeland Arts members and annual pass holders will be able to attend free of charge.

Organisers say the weekend promises a mix of fun, discovery, and creativity, offering visitors an unforgettable experience in one of the Lake District’s most scenic cultural venues.
