12 Apr 2026 Police Issue Safety Appeal Ahead of Final Uppies and Downies Match

Police have issued a public safety appeal ahead of the final match of the annual Uppies and Downies games in Workington, urging people to take care and look out for one another during the large-scale event.

The traditional no-rules football game, which attracts large crowds each year, is set to begin at 6:30pm, with players aiming to carry a specially made leather ball to their respective goals across the town.

Local officers, along with partner agencies, will be deployed across the area to help maintain safety and manage the crowds. Authorities have advised attendees to remain aware of their surroundings, especially in busy areas, and to take extra caution near water and uneven terrain.

Participants are also encouraged to park responsibly to avoid damage to vehicles, while parents and guardians have been asked to speak with young people about staying safe during the event.

The Uppies and Downies game is a long-standing Easter tradition in the region, known for its physical and unpredictable nature, drawing both players and spectators from across the community.
