Council Pledges to Seek Alternative Care Home Solution for Alston Residents
Westmorland and Furness Council have confirmed it will look to secure alternative accommodation for residents at Grisedale Croft Care Home in Alston as discussions continue over the facility’s future.
The council is currently reviewing options for both Grisedale Croft in Alston and Apple Thwaite Green in Windermere, with a formal 12-week public consultation now underway. The process will gather views from residents, families, staff, and the wider community before any final decision is made.
Grisedale Croft, which has a small number of remaining residents, is being considered for possible relocation support due to limited occupancy and the building’s age. Council reports have indicated that the facility is over 50 years old and no longer meets modern care standards, with limited alternative provision available locally.
As part of the consultation, the council has stated a preferred option of providing suitable alternative accommodation within the local area if a building can be identified. Officials say this approach aims to ensure continuity of care while addressing long-term sustainability concerns.
Councillors have stressed that no final decision has been taken and that the consultation is designed to ensure residents and families are fully involved in shaping the outcome.
The council will review feedback once the consultation closes, with a final decision expected later this year.
