Athlete Finishes Orienteering Event Despite Broken Leg in Lake District
A remarkable display of determination saw an athlete complete an orienteering event in the Lake District despite suffering a broken leg, according to a local mountain rescue team.
Langdale Ambleside Mountain Rescue Team said the incident was among several callouts during a busy الفترة in April, with volunteers responding to eight incidents since April 10.
The team was called to the organised event at around 12:50 pm on April 12 after receiving reports of an ankle injury. However, the injury was later confirmed to be a broken fibula.
Despite the severity of the injury, the athlete managed to continue and finish the race. Rescue team members praised her determination, noting she “managed to hobble to the end” before receiving treatment.
After completing the course, the team immobilised her leg and carried her off the hillside on a stretcher before transporting her to Grasmere for onward hospital treatment.
The same day, rescuers were also called to assist a walker with a shoulder injury in the White Moss area, highlighting the increasing demand on emergency services in the region.
In the days surrounding the incident, the team responded to multiple other emergencies, including walkers with injuries, individuals becoming disoriented in poor visibility, and accidents on challenging terrain.
Rescue officials have urged visitors to take extra care when exploring the Lake District, particularly during organised events and in difficult conditions, as callouts continue to rise.
