Major Breakthrough for Barrow’s Marina Village Development
Plans to transform Barrow’s historic docklands into a modern waterfront neighbourhood have taken a significant step forward following the appointment of a strategic development partner for the Marina Village project.
Westmorland and Furness Council has selected Muse Places, working alongside partners within the English Cities Fund (ECF), to help drive the development of the large-scale regeneration scheme. The project is expected to deliver around 1,350 new homes, alongside nature conservation areas and new public open spaces, creating a vibrant and sustainable community in the town.
Council leaders described the decision as a crucial moment for Barrow’s future, highlighting the long-term effort, planning, and investment that have brought the project to this stage. The development is seen as a vital part of wider regeneration plans aimed at improving housing supply, supporting local businesses, and strengthening Barrow’s appeal as a place to live and work.
The partnership with Muse and ECF will allow early design, planning, funding strategies, and governance work to begin, paving the way for a master development agreement that will guide the project’s delivery over time. The council believes this coordinated approach will ensure high-quality design, effective infrastructure planning, and long-term sustainability.
The Marina Village scheme is also closely linked to Barrow’s economic growth ambitions, particularly rising demand for housing driven by expansion in the shipbuilding industry and government investment in defence and infrastructure. Officials say the project will play a key role in meeting housing needs for workers and families while supporting the town’s long-term development.
Work is already under way to prepare the site, with land remediation and infrastructure improvements progressing in phases, supported by millions of pounds in government and Homes England funding. Once completed, Marina Village is expected to become a landmark residential area, combining modern housing with natural spaces and waterfront living, and contributing to Barrow’s transformation for future generations.
