Majestic Hotel In Barrow Approved For Major Refurbishment.
The historic Majestic Hotel in Barrow-in-Furness has been given the go-ahead for a major refurbishment, creating an opportunity for the long-standing building to return to use after being vacant for around two years.
The project is being led by Ashall Projects Limited, which applied for planning permission to refurbish the building and prepare it for a new life as a hotel. The approved proposals include improvements to parts of the interior, replacement windows and new external signage.
A key part of the refurbishment will be the installation of a new lift, alongside changes to the hotel's internal layout. Ten dormer windows are expected to be replaced on a like-for-like basis with sash windows, while other windows identified as being in poor condition will also be addressed as part of the wider works.
The refurbished property is planned to become a Garner Hotel under the IHG brand. According to the architects, the hotel is intended to complement the nearby Holiday Inn Express, which has operated successfully since opening in December 2019.
The plans also include a new arrangement for the reception, bar and lounge areas, creating a more open arrival space for guests. The proposed layout is designed to improve visibility through the lobby, with the bar becoming a prominent feature within the entrance area.
Some of the proposed rooms are expected to provide longer-stay accommodation with kitchenettes, giving the development a different offering from conventional short-stay hotel rooms. The project will also involve removing some modern timber wall cladding and other internal features added during earlier alterations.
The redevelopment represents a significant change for a building that has remained unused while requiring substantial repairs. Bringing the Majestic Hotel back into operation could add new accommodation to Barrow and contribute to activity within the town's hospitality and visitor economy.
With planning approval now secured, attention will turn to the refurbishment works and the eventual reopening of the historic hotel. The project is expected to preserve important elements of the Grade II-listed building while introducing modern facilities for future guests.
